Metal roofing is one of the fastest-growing residential roofing categories in Northern California, and Sonoma County homeowners have compelling reasons to consider it: inherent Class A fire resistance, 50–70+ year service life, excellent performance in the county's wind and rain events, and cool roof reflectivity that addresses California's Title 24 energy requirements. The decision between the two primary metal roof systems — standing seam and corrugated/exposed-fastener — depends on budget, aesthetics, roof geometry, and application.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Standing seam is the premium metal roofing system and the one most commonly specified for high-quality residential applications. In a standing seam system, panels run vertically from ridge to eave, and the panel seams are raised above the panel surface and mechanically interlocked or snapped together. Critically, all fasteners are concealed beneath the seams — there are no exposed screws or nails that can back out over time or create water infiltration pathways.

Standing Seam Specifications

The concealed fastener system is the defining advantage of standing seam. Every exposed fastener penetration in a roofing system is a potential future leak point as the rubber washers that seal them age and compress. Eliminating exposed fasteners eliminates this maintenance concern over the roof's 50–70 year service life. Standing seam is also the preferred platform for rooftop solar panel installation — clamps attach directly to the seams without any roof penetrations.

Sutter's In-House Sheet Metal Shop Advantage

Sutter Roofing's in-house sheet metal shop is a significant advantage for standing seam projects. We fabricate custom ridge caps, hip caps, valley flashings, chimney flashings, and trim pieces on-site rather than ordering standard pre-made components that may not fit the specific geometry of your roof. This reduces lead times, improves quality, and allows us to address complex architectural details that generic metal roofing contractors cannot handle.

Corrugated / Exposed-Fastener Metal Roofing

Corrugated metal roofing — and its flat-panel cousin, R-panel — uses exposed screws to fasten panels directly to the roof structure. These are lower-cost systems with good performance characteristics but different maintenance requirements and a somewhat more industrial aesthetic that works well on agricultural buildings, modern farmhouse designs, and contemporary residential applications.

Metal Substrate Options

Galvalume

Galvalume is a steel substrate coated with a zinc-aluminum alloy. It offers superior corrosion resistance compared to standard galvanized steel and is the most common substrate for residential standing seam systems. Most Galvalume products carry 40+ year corrosion warranty coverage when protected by a quality paint system.

Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel uses a pure zinc coating. It's economical and performs well in most environments but has shorter corrosion resistance than Galvalume, particularly in coastal and fog-prone locations like western Sonoma County. For coastal or near-coastal applications, Galvalume or aluminum is preferred.

Aluminum

Aluminum is inherently corrosion-resistant (no coating required to prevent oxidation) and is the preferred metal for coastal applications. It's lighter than steel and does not rust. The trade-off is higher material cost and lower dent resistance compared to steel. Aluminum standing seam is an excellent choice for homes in Bodega Bay, Jenner, and other coastal Sonoma County locations.

Paint Systems: Kynar 500 and PVDF Coatings

For painted metal roofing, the paint system is nearly as important as the substrate. Kynar 500 (a polyvinylidene fluoride or PVDF coating) is the industry-leading finish system for residential and commercial metal roofing. It provides exceptional UV resistance, color retention, chalk resistance, and adhesion. Kynar-coated panels typically carry 30–40 year paint warranty coverage. Avoid polyester paint systems for residential applications — they're less expensive but typically carry only 10-year paint warranties and fade noticeably in California's UV environment.

NorCal Advantages of Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is particularly well-suited to Sonoma County's specific conditions. Its Class A fire resistance addresses the county's fire hazard requirements without any additional measures. Light-colored and unpainted Galvalume metal surfaces meet California Title 24 cool roof requirements, reducing air conditioning loads in warm inland valleys. Metal roofing's smooth surface sheds fog-moisture quickly and doesn't support moss or algae growth — relevant for homes in the county's foggy western and coastal zones. The light weight (1.5–2.5 lbs/sqft) places minimal structural load on even older homes that can't support tile.
